As a young woman, Johanna maintained a garden with her Papa. Together, they would prepare meals using their home-grown produce. The opportunity to travel both cross country and to Europe on several occasions influenced her love of food. On these trips, itineraries were built around meals, which further emphasized how food enhances an experience. Inspiration from the famed chef, Alice Waters, and her “Slow Food” movement, also fueled Johanna’s blossoming culinary interest. In contrast to fast food, meals are prepared lovingly and simply to showcase the flavors of the food. In 2008, Johanna graduated with a degree in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America in New York. She relocated to the Outer Banks where she co-owned and operated Café Lachine from 2011 to 2018. Today, she is the proud and successful owner of Johanna’s Events & Catering, located on historic Roanoke Island in Wanchese.
